Why regular examinations matter

Make time for prevention.

01

Review your oral health

A check-up gives your dentist a chance to examine your teeth, gums and mouth and discuss any changes.

02

Address problems early

Untreated problems can become harder to manage. Routine reviews support early advice and treatment when needed.

03

Keep advice personal

Discuss cleaning habits, diet and general health, then agree when your next review should be.

How often should I attend?

Your next visit should fit your needs.

Six months is not a universal rule. Your dentist recommends an interval after assessing your oral health and risk of future problems.

AdultsAge 18 and over

3–24months between routine reviews

The interval is personalised. Longer gaps are for patients whose oral health and risk assessment support them.

Children & teenagersUnder 18

3–12months between routine reviews

Growing teeth need regular review. Your dentist will recommend the timing for your child.

Older adultsCare in later life

Individualwithin the adult guidance

There is no separate interval based on age alone. Your dentist considers your oral health, medical history and care needs.

These ranges apply to routine reviews, not treatment or urgent visits. Follow your dentist’s recommendation; it may change over time. Source: NICE dental recall guidance ↗

Care that adapts with you.

Tell us about dry mouth, changes in medicines, difficulties with brushing or concerns about dentures. These are useful topics to discuss when planning your care.

Regular dental reviews still matter if you wear dentures, including checking their fit and the health of your mouth. Read the Oral Health Foundation’s denture guidance ↗

Your questions

Planning your next visit.

Do I need a check-up if nothing hurts?+

Keep to the review interval recommended by your dentist, even when you feel well. A review checks your mouth and gives you a chance to discuss prevention.

Should I wait until my recall date if I notice a problem?+

No. Contact the practice if you develop pain or notice a new dental problem. Routine recall intervals do not apply to urgent care or ongoing treatment.

Does everyone need a six-monthly visit?+

No. The recommended interval depends on your individual oral health and risk. Ask your dentist to explain the interval agreed for you.

Where can I see the fees?+

See our private fee schedule for examination and treatment fees, or contact the team with a question.
